Her CNS role covered a lot of areas some of which are: training parents/carers in LTV care, staff training, home visits, care package panel discussions and stepdown facilitation.

Since taking on her role within NTPN Selina has really enjoyed working with all the teams in the region who are involved in LTV care. She has remained driven in standardising LTV Education and collaborating with others to improve the service. Her main focus has been DGH LTV Education and she has been working on many LTV projects to help implement this education and troubleshoot identified areas for improvement. Emma Whitcombe- LTV Skills Implementation Lead for South Thames

Emma is a paediatric nurse who specialises in Long Term Ventilation (LTV).  The early parts of Emma’s nursing career was working in General Medicine and HDU. This is where Emma gained a special interest in Long Term Ventilation (LTV), becoming Deputy Ward Sister for the newly opening LTV unit and then becoming the LTV Clinical Educator, completing her PG Certificate in Clinical Education.

Emma Lear- Welfare Advisor

Emma Lear works as a Welfare Advisor within the Pan Thames Paediatric Long-Term Ventilation Programme, and assists health and social care professionals who support families of children on long-term ventilation, with the management of non-clinical issues. This can include advice and support regarding exploring financial options such as maximising household income, obtaining charitable support for items that the family may require, and with navigating housing solutions. Emma’s work also involves the production of content such as factsheets, guides and education, to increase welfare knowledge amongst NHS staff, to enable them to support their patients with welfare related issues, which can contribute to delayed discharge from hospital, or unexpected hospital readmissions.

Emma studied Philosophy at University, and during this time, her interest in social policy led her to volunteer at the Royal Court of Justice Advice Bureau and Islington Citizens Advice. As part of this voluntary role, Emma worked in an outreach advice project at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court. It was here that Emma saw the value of advice workers becoming specialists, not just in areas of advice such as ‘housing’ or ‘benefits’, but in specialising in and working with specific client groups. Following this, Emma moved on to focus on providing advice to older people and adults with complex care needs at Age UK & Westminster City Council, before joining the NHS in 2016 to support health and social care professionals to best support their patients.
